A Day at the Beach

"Zerberts"

After a few days of shuttling mom around the city, we headed north through the countryside to show her another panorama of Haiti.

After passing by dry fields where farmers bent over with their hoes making new rows to be planted, passing by burros carrying their loads to market, by banana tree fields and villages teeming with life, we arrived at the beach.

In the shade of a palm tree, we enjoyed the breezes from the ocean, shell hunting, and taking Solomon for his first swim in the ocean. Our little man welcomed the cool, salty water like he'd been swimming forever.

There is no moment more relaxing than one sitting with people you love under the shade of a palm frond, feeling the breeze off the ocean and sipping on a cold lemonaid or rum punch while letting thoughts melt into the sound of water flowing over a rocky beach.

Despite the press, despite the political atmosphere, despite the misery and poverty that affects so may, Haiti is still an island in the Caribbean. And what a beautiful place it can be.
